Crunchy on the outside – White
This piece draws inspiration from the form of a seed pod, a symbol of both vulnerability and resilience. The red core at its heart represents raw, exposed fragility—something precious and alive, yet always at risk.
The sharp spikes encasing the core speak to the instinct to protect, creating a contrast between the delicate and the dangerous. I wanted to capture that tension, the way beauty and menace coexist in nature and in ourselves.
The golden caterpillars and insects are deliberate, delicate additions. They reflect the unseen forces that creep into our lives, sometimes beautiful, sometimes insidious. Their presence is meant to unsettle, to remind us of the quiet power of things often overlooked.
The surrounding leaves tie the piece to the natural world, a place of growth, decay, and transformation. They frame the story of this piece—one of life’s complexity, where beauty, fragility, and darkness are in constant balance.
This work is an exploration of those tensions and a reflection on the intricate, sometimes unsettling patterns of existence.
This was actually inspired by an economists musings on how countries ought to exist. He was discussing that for a successful country it is very important to have crunchy difficult to cross borders and soft easily crossed inner terrain. Such geography helps develop inside, while protecting the country from outside threats.

Crunchy on the outside – Billelis Edition
Sometimes complacency and calmness can lead to many negative effects. Even if the crunchiness and gooiness is maintained in the right places. This image represents how something that was growing and prosperous can quickly degrade and destroy itself from within.
